Street Autonomy

“In 2019, LAZNIA CCA invited two local activists from the Nowy Port neighbourhood to a curatorial residency. Iwona Woźniewska and Adrian “Lipskee” Lipiński will attempt to physically and symbolically transform the space of the former municipal bathhouse and reconstruct the building’s history, taking us back to a time when it was not yet adapted into a contemporary art centre as part of urban renewal processes. At the time, the abandoned, derelict edifice served the local youths as an unofficial, yet extremely important grassroots art centre, immersed in street culture.

Coming back to the roots of their own identity, the LAZNIA CCA team aims to create a common space, facilitating meetings and collective actions. It is an attempt at transforming the stereotypical perception of street culture and its creative processes. Street Autonomy entails introducing its participants to the sources of inspirations, assumptions, philosophy and the social aspect of street culture.

The experimental proposal marks an important step in LAZNIA CCA’s learning process and an attempt at creating a discursive, introspective and self-critical institution model.”

During an almost year-long residency, the artists will produce a series of events focusing on the history of the bathhouse and elaborating on individual elements of street culture by organizing meetings with artists, debates and film screenings. The residents will involve other local artists in their actions, as well as members of the 180º Association they manage, for whom the context of street culture is also extremely topical.

The entire process will culminate in the Street Autonomy exhibition, taking place from 22th November 2019 till 12th January 2020 at LAZNIA CCA in Nowy Port.”
